Meet the Family
and Celebrate the Victory
by Linda C. Butler
My parents, Charlie and N. Jane Vance, were married during World War II in a simple ceremony at Rosedale BC. At their wedding my Dad’s mother and his stepdad, Emily and Wes Jackman, were the only relatives present. During the war years there were no lavish events because the country’s resources were focused on the war effort. The War ended in 1945 and after that, people gradually resumed a normal lifestyle.
I showed this picture to my Mom, who is now 90, and she said that after Steve returned home, they went to Winnipeg and stayed with her sister and brother-in-law, Jack and Lizzie Challis. This picture is taken at their home. On the left is Steve Vance, still in uniform, my Dad Charlie Vance, Jack Challis, and my maternal grandfather, Jake Ennis. This was the first opportunity after the War that the family got together to meet new family members and to celebrate the Victory.
